that must be it, the dude appeal, WR's were my drink of choice 20ish years ago, and yet they never went down like a Guinness...

Big L is one of my favorites for sure! I was never the same after I read an essay on how The Dude is like a Buddha and then watched the film after my first romp with Alice D. The Dude is one of the only main characters that is not a protagonist. Everything happens to him and he responds in kind.
